Be inspired by the relaxed elegance of George and Edith Vanderbilt's 250-room family home and country retreat in Asheville, NC. Discover original art from masters such as Renoir, magnificent 16th-century tapestries, Napoleon's chess set, a library with 10,000 volumes, a Banquet Hall with a 70-foot ceiling, 65 fireplaces, an indoor pool, bowling alley, and priceless antiques. Opened to friends on Christmas Eve 1895, this French Renaissance chateáu remains America's largest privately owned home.
Carl Sandburg's Legacy Touches Our Lives
Carl Sandburg spent a lifetime exploring what it meant to be an American and asked the eternal questions, "Who am I, where am I going and where have I been?"
He did this through poetry, song, lectures, writing and lasting friendships with kindred spirits.
Explore Sandburg's legacy and Experience Your America
We suggest spending 2 1/2 hours to enjoy the site. Take a half-hour guided house tour ($5 fee), visit the dairy goat barn and stroll over five miles of trails that the Sandburg family enjoyed.
Flat Rock Playhouse
The barn-like appearance of the main stage facility is reminiscent of our summer stock beginnings, but today it houses state of the art lighting and sound systems, electronic stages, costume studio/storage, and dressing room space for 40. The Auditorium seats 506 patrons in air-conditioned comfort. There is reserved seating for patrons with special needs and assistive listening devices are available at no additional charge.
Albert S. Gooch Scenic Studio
Adjoining the main stage is the scenic studio (75”X 40”) fully equipped for scenic construction, welding, painting, properties craft storage and construction.
Concession Stand
Located in the garden courtyard beside the main stage, the concession stand serves light snacks, sodas, beer, wine, mixed beverages and Leona’s Honey Lemonade (a Playhouse tradition). Also available are souvenirs including ball caps, tee-shirts, sweats and other collectables. The Concession Stand opens one hour prior to each performance and is open at intermission.

Pisgah Forest, North Carolina
Looking Glass Falls is one of the most popular falls in Western North Carolina. The name "Looking Glass" comes from Looking Glass Rock, where water freezes on its sides in the winter and then glistens in the sunlight like a mirror or looking glass. Looking Glass Creek, which flows past the rock, is also named for the impressive natural structure. Its easy accessibility makes Looking Glass Falls a popular spot for travelers along U.S. 276 near Brevard. The falls are 60 feet tall.
Looking Glass Falls is located right off of U.S. 276. From Brevard, take U.S. 276 north, about 5 miles past the entrance to Pisgah National Forest. The falls will be on your right.

Piggy's (the ice cream parlor) and Harry's (the grill) have been a Hendersvonville classic since the 1950s. Very informal and considered "cool" with young and old alike, the place is busiest after school and throughout the summer. The wide variety of ice cream flavors, antique-laden decor, and down home atmosphere establish this unique eatery as a Retro favorite. Its hard to miss the historic Biltmore Dairy sign alongside the pink pig.
"The absolute best hamburger and milkshake in NC. Very casual and friendly. I'm in the restaurant bus myself and can tell you that these guys don't cut any corners on quality. I stop in every time I'm in the area."
