Todd & Rebecca

Our Story

A West Side Story

Introduction

Here is the story of how Todd and Rebecca came to be MARRIED! It's a short story, just seven easy to read chapters. You can read one a day for a week over your morning coffee. Or, if you have a book report due tomorrow, you can read the whole thing in one sitting and still have time to do other homework! If you've been reading along as the story was written I'm sorry to inform you that there will be no more chapters. But we hope you enjoyed it and thank you for sharing in our story.

The Last Chapter

The Ceremony
The Last Chapter

The day was March 2, 2007. Todd stood at the front of Nu restaurant waiting for his bride. It seemed like forever as he looked out at the glowing faces of his mom and dad seated to his left and other family circled around them, and friends beyond them all there to honour the vows he and Rebecca were about to make. And then he saw her through a gap in the crowd. There was pride in his face as he watched her walk towards him, mixed with tears and a little bit of relief. The relief was thanks to her dress not being a "creative" colour, her hair not being "big and poofy" and that she was there, taking his hand. He was no longer alone in front of this crowd, his partner had arrived. He whispered in her ear and everyone waited until they turned and smiled and the ceremony was underway. It was rich, playful, funny and romantic. It was a cermony that left the couple touched: by each other, by the message given, by the generosity of those gathered who confirmed them as husband and wife. But before he bent to kiss his Mrs., she held up a finger. Todd had to wait a few seconds more as Rebecca produced a gift, a promise in song, to cherish the brightness of his eyes and never let them down, and always to hold his love with a gentle hand for all time as her one and only.

Chapter 1

When We Met
Chapter 1

It was October 2002 and rehearsals for the Arts Club's production of West Side Story were one week underway. Rebecca, to be playing Maria, was being introduced to the cast by director Bill Millerd. Some familiar faces and some she had never met before one by one (at Bill's direction) stated their name and their role.
There was Jeff Irving whom she had a baby with just a year ago on the Waterfront stage, his hair dyed yellow to play Baby John. And Grant Tilly playing Action. Was it really five years ago since they worked together and hadn't seen each other? How exciting to be back at the beginning of the rehearsal process again.
The circle of introductions were finishing off just as Todd Talbot entered the rehearsal hall . . .

Chapter 2

When We Met for the Second Time, Actually

A memory of the cast list flashed through Rebecca's head. That's right, she had forgotten Todd would be playing Riff. Bill, noticing someone had been missed, ushered Todd into the room and personally introduced the two of them.
A sensation of her cheeks going red, and the room focussing in on them made Rebecca feel the need to jump in and say something very calm and collected, "Hey" she uttered. But Todd's acknowledgement indicated more that this was not their first meeting.
"Oh you two have met before, good, okay" Bill conceded and Rebecca took an invisible sigh of relief.
Had that whole exchange not just taken ten times longer than it should have? Did anyone else notice that they had just experienced a freak incidence of time standing still? Did anyone notice that she said 'hey' instead of something normal and polite like 'hello' or something normal and quick like 'hi'? Had anyone noticed that she was agonizing over her choice of word as she walked over to a chair at the front corner of the room? It didn't matter really. She didn't need to go over and over it. She just needed to change her shoes.
And then she felt a hand on her shoulder. Rebecca looked up from her seat and there was Todd again looking down at her, saying something charming. He had noticed. Maybe nobody else did but she was sure he must have noticed that there was something more than 'hello' in that 'hey'.

Chapter 3

The Flirting Process
Chapter 3

That first week of rehearsal began to pass. Rebecca joined into the comfortable ritual of going downstairs to the Backstage Lounge for lunch with the cast, then ending the day with a run of the dance numbers as they were. Rebecca sat at the front and made sure that the attention she payed everyone was equal to the amount she watched Todd. Five seconds Todd, five seconds Chance, five seconds Todd, five seconds Rnold, 7 seconds Todd - oops, 10 seconds Stirling for good measure.
Then, at the start of the second week, Rebecca met the man who would be playing her lover, Tyley Ross. He was easy to work with and he made a point of going to lunch together to get comfortable enough with each other that they wouldn't appear like two strangers on stage. They both had a good handle on the music and fell easily into performing the love songs for the cast.
Well, you can imagine, all that good chemistry started to make Todd nervous. Not only was she rehearsing with Tyley instead of discreetly watching Todd, Rebecca was also missing out on all the flirting he had been orchestrating over lunch.
Todd knew he had to do something - two things actually. But the first was to buddy up with Tyley. Now instead of Rebecca and Tyley going for lunch, Todd and Tyley were going for lunch . . . would Rebecca like to tag along? So tag along she did and a tiny triangle began.

Chapter 4

A Broken Riff

Tyley, Todd, and Rebecca were getting along quite well together. They went for square burgers at Bridges, chicken pizza at Figaro’s and enjoyed the cornbread at Ouisi’s. There didn’t seem to be any sparks flying between Tyley and Rebecca off-stage and the fear of a real life Tony and Maria romance subsided. Instead there seemed to be a bit of a spark igniting between Rebecca and Todd. But now all that work Todd had put into building a triangle was working against him. Now if he wanted to spend any time alone with Rebecca he was going to have to find a legitimate excuse not to invite Tyley. Todd began to form a complex and ingenious plan involving Peter Huck who was playing Maria’s brother Bernardo. One day during rehearsal Todd let Peter break one of his ribs and the plan was set in motion. Throughout the day Todd laid the groundwork, complaining of a pain in his side and even difficulty breathing. And that night while Rebecca was with some cast members at the Cactus Club after rehearsal, she received a phone call from Todd. He was at the hospital emergency room waiting to see a doctor. Would she come and wait with him?

Chapter 5

Surprisingly, It wasn't Really the First Kiss
Chapter 5

When Rebecca arrived at the emergency she found Todd leaning against the wall of a long skinny hallway. He had already been waiting for a lengthy amount of time and it wasn’t long until he was given a room and told a doctor would be there shortly. Rebecca waited with him. It was one of those rare occurrences in a hospital where the two people in the waiting room were enjoying each other so much that they were actually disappointed when the doctor showed up. After Todd was informed that there is nothing you can do about a broken rib, it was time to go. And the kiss they shared before Rebecca watched Todd disappear around the corner, while it was very romantic, new and exciting, wasn’t actually their first.
It was opening night weeks earlier. Their recent rapport had led Rebecca to believe that she might enjoy some of Todd’s company at the Bijou Bistro. Instead it was Rnold who held her attention with a poignant question about who, in her life, is an example of power and strength. The music was loud and many voices were fighting to converse above it, Rebecca included. Obviously Bill's direction to 'be louder' should have been taken with her from the theatre, for when she answered, “God” Rnold’s eyebrows raised as he repeated back, “Todd?”
Now Rnold was Todd’s roommate and Rebecca was sure it was no accident that Rnold thought she had just said his name. She was sure that Todd must be sharing some of her feelings. Then why had he not said a word to her all night? Ready to give up, she put on her coat and informed Zeyn Ali, her ride for the evening who was tearing up the dance floor, that she was ready to go. But Zeyn still had a few more dances in him and Rebecca sat at an empty table next to the bar to wait.
Todd seized the moment. There he finally was sitting across from her. Had it been earlier in the evening, Rebecca would have been more than ready to jump into a witty banter with him. But he had made her wait too long, her stomach was protesting the late night, and she was already prepared to make her way out the door. Foreshadowing his endless ability to make Rebecca happy, Todd swept her up over his head and as he lowered her to the ground, manipulated the brief meeting of their lips . . .

Chapter 6

A Yellow Face Cloth

A few short weeks after that opening night, Todd asked Rebecca to join him on their official first date. It was November 24th after the West Side Story Sunday matinee. Todd planned dinner and a documentary (Standing in the Shadows of Motown) at the Fifth Avenue Cinemas. But it was still the middle of the afternoon when the curtain came down and too early to head over to Figaro's for dinner. So Todd agreed to chauffeur Rebecca on a small errand. There was a 70% off sale on towels at the Bay and yellow towels were on her mom's Christmas list that year.
That first date, if it had not been planned out as a test, ended up being a good indicator of what a keeper Todd was. If ever anyone has experienced the event of Rebecca making a decision, like that of deciding which towels to choose, they know that it is not a painless task. A few hours were passed that afternoon as Rebecca agonized over the right colour, style, and best quality for best price. And Todd patiently weighed out each option with her. Then, when the decision was finally made and Rebecca made her way to the checkout, Todd followed behind gallantly carrying a small yellow washcloth. He too would give a gift to Pat that Christmas . . .

Chapter 7

A Ring in the Air
Chapter 7

Christmas came and went that year and Pat never for a moment considered it odd that the man her daughter had been dating for a few weeks was giving her a face cloth for Christmas. Then it was New Year's that came and went. . . and then it came and went again, and in between all that celebrating Rebecca went on tour but came back to Todd, and Todd went to Charlottetown but came back to Rebecca. Through the heres and theres and ups and downs they ended up celebrating together.
Then, on the eve of New Years 2006, 35 000 feet in the air, Todd got down on his knee and asked Rebecca to spend the rest of her life with him as his wife. After making him sweat a bit she said Yes! and West Jet flight 626 showered the newly engaged couple with applause.
Back in their seats, with drinks on the house and a ring on her finger, Rebecca embraced her husband-to-be as he revealed the story of everything he'd done to make this moment happen. It had been quite a journey to that moment, but an even greater journey was still waiting, the exciting journey all married couples face: that of taking two lives and making them one.
