Dave & Torrey

Wedding Party

Monica

Best Woman, a.k.a. "Wonder Woman"
Monica

Even though they both went to UCSD, Torrey and Monica didn't meet until they both spent a quarter at Dartmouth, where they were "randomly" paired as roommates. They soon became the best of friends, and while they have never since lived in the same city together, their friendship has survived transcontinental and even trans-oceanic distances.

For the last three years Monica was living in Trondheim, Norway with her husband Daniel, but they recently moved back to Los Angeles. And, they just had their first child this summer! Tor and Mon are pictured here during their 2005 cross-country road trip from North Carolina to Los Angeles.

John

Best Man
John

Dave first met John at a Junior High Math League meet in seventh grade, where he noticed two things: John was really tall, and he was really good at math. Over the next few years Dave discovered that John was even better at being a great friend than he was at growing and computing. Throughout high school at Blake they shared moments such as doing physics on the boat, going on failed cow-tipping expeditions (this was Minnesota after all) and commiserating in teenage angst.

John and Dave parted ways in 1998 as John went off to Stanford and Dave to Harvard. But Dave visited John several times at Stanford, where John mysteriously never had any work to do and thus was able to convince Dave that he should come to the Bay Area for grad school. After doing so, Dave then convinced John that Berkeley was the place to be, so John started a Ph.D. in computer science there in 2005.

Today John lives with his wife Jessica (see below) in Berkeley. The photo above was taken during John and Jessica's wedding weekend in 2007 and is probably the only picture ever in which Dave appears to be taller than John.

Lindsay

Bridesmaid
Lindsay

Torrey met Lindsay in 2001 when she took a room in the Daly City house where Lindsay was living. They grew close while living together for two years in two different stints, and to this day they maintain regular Thai food, pedicure, and Grey's Anatomy dates.

Lindsay is pictured here with her husband Luis; they live in Castro Valley.

Robby

Groomsman
Robby

Robby wins the prize for "most years having gone to school with Dave" -- 16 in total. Though they met at Blake in first grade, they didn't become friends until middle school, when they took perverse pleasure in learning about ancient Europe in Steve Johnson's history class and passing notes written on Kleenex in the back of science class. When it came time to choose a college, Robby passed up sunny, frolicsome Stanford for gray, stress-inducing Harvard. Since Dave was also attending Harvard, this allowed them to discover that there is nothing less interesting to non-Minnesotans than debating the optimal route from Chanhassen to Edina (take Highway 5 to 212).

After fooling everyone into thinking he was a liberal arts major for four years, Robby returned to Minnesota to pursue a medical degree. He graduated in 2007 and is now a family practice resident in St. Paul. He is pictured here with his fiancée Andrea.

Laura

Bridesmaid (Groom's Sister)
Laura

Laura arrived on the scene, much to Dave's dismay, in 1983. When he realized she wasn't going away he decided to make the best of it and spent their childhood beating her at Monopoly and various card games. Laura had the last laugh, however, when she turned out to be just as smart as Dave, but cooler and funnier.

After taking Penn by storm -- she was president of the rugby team and captain of the hockey team -- Laura decided to ignore the example of the rest of her family and experience the Real World for a few years. Laura now lives in Manhattan with her boyfriend Josh (and their dog Toby); they are pictured here in 2007 on a San Francisco Cable Car, an object for which all people related to Dave have a special affinity.

Jon, a.k.a. "Brother"

Groomsman (Bride's Brother)
Jon, a.k.a. "Brother"

Unlike Dave, Torrey was ecstatic when her sibling arrived, immediately taking over all parental responsibilities and declaring to anyone who was interested, "He's not my brother, he's my husband." (Four-year-old Torrey didn't quite have the family roles straightened out yet.) After failing to stay taller than Jon (he passed her when he was 11 and she was 15) Torrey was forced to resort to non-physical means of control, which may explain her interest in psychology.

Jon lives in San Diego, where he enjoys White Sox games, Padres games and chicken in almost any form imaginable. He is pictured here with his girlfriend Lynae during Thanksgiving 2007.

Amy

Bridesmaid/Huppah Holder
Amy

Torrey's first cousin Amy grew up in San Francisco, which made their Midwestern cousins jealous that they both got to hang out in California. After attending a suburban high school, Amy went to UC Santa Cruz, where she discovered her true roots. When in Santa Cruz she lived in a trailer, grew her own kale and arugula, and worked on organic farms in places ranging from Santa Cruz to North Carolina to Ecuador. She graduated from UCSC in June 2008 and would most likely be found today somewhere in the woods in Oregon.

Suzy

Bridesmaid/Huppah Holder
Suzy

Torrey's first cousin Suzy grew up in the Chicago area, leading Torrey to learn about things they don't have in San Diego like winter coats and snowmen. Suzy just graduated from the University of Vermont, where she did not grow kale but did engage in other hippie-ish activities. She is currently a teacher in Vermont.

Anthony, a.k.a. "Twan"

Groomsman/Huppah Holder
Anthony, a.k.a. "Twan"

Anthony started at Blake in first grade and became friends with Dave in fifth grade, when the two conspired to see how high they could build the piles of paper and books on their desks without getting into trouble. Other notable events include attending French Camp in 1994 (with a 4-to-1 girl-guy ratio), watching Terminator 2 on the 80-inch projection screen, and playing many video games while Dave tried in vain to get everyone to focus on the "work" they were supposed to be doing.

Anthony is pictured here at a party on New Year's Eve 2007. I have no idea who the guy in the hat is.

Noah

Groomsman/Huppah Holder
Noah

Noah and Dave were placed together randomly as freshman roommates at Harvard (though it might not have been so random as Noah requested a "math person"). Though Dave was dismayed to find himself the second-best mathematician in his freshman dorm room, Dave, Noah, and their other two roommates Nat and Alec hit it off so well that they lived together all four years of college. When Dave arrived in Berkeley in 2003 he found Noah already living there and conveniently looking for roommates. They decided to reprise college but this time with more organic produce, and spent the next four years living together with a variety of Berkeley characters.

Noah still lives in Berkeley and is entering is last year as a Ph.D. student in the math department. He is shown here demonstrating the knitted organs of his wife Malia at a Halloween party in 2005.

Jessica

Diva and "Day Of" Coordinator
Jessica

Dave met Jessica at Stanford 2001, when she was "John's new girlfriend." Their relationship grew over the years, and when Torrey came on the scene in 2005, Jessica was the first of Dave's friends that she met -- Jessica was so excited that she came running out to the driveway to meet Torrey. Torrey and Dave were both in the wedding party for John and Jessica's wedding in 2007, and are thrilled to have such close friends living only three blocks away.

Jessica just started an MBA program this fall at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business. In addition to her natural ability to organize and manage things (which is how she got the job as our "day of" coordinator) she is a stellar soprano, and we are delighted to have her performing during our wedding ceremony.

Zack

Guest Book Man (who didn't even sign the guestbook himself)
Zack

If you're going to have a guy who monitors your guest book to make sure everyone signs it, why not have a professional editor? Torrey's cousin Zack, who lives in Chicago, is the editor for a magazine called College News. Along with making sure to yell "L'chaim!" the loudest at our wedding, this guy will make sure your guest book entry is witty and exciting.

An avid sports and music fan, Zack is always bringing the party along with him wherever he goes. Just make sure to keep your Britta water filter far away from him!
