A rustic barn wedding on a farm in Virginia.

From sweet ceremony location to romantic reception site, there is one type of venue that this South Atlantic state has in plenty: the farm. From truly rustic to recently renovated, barns galore and open haylofts, these Virginia wedding locations have enough character, history and natural beauty to go around.

Hermitage Hill Farm

Emblematic of Virginia’s reputation for quality horse country, Hermitage Hill Farm & Stables takes a piece of the state’s history and runs with it. The rolling green fields, the horses at pasture, the four-board fencing – it all adds up to a beautiful event venue. The patio and mountain views certainly don’t hurt the elegant Shenandoah Valley appeal.

Fat Cat Farm

We can’t help it – we love Fat Cat Farm. Owned by Shawn Cossette of Beehive Events, this venue is Rustic with a capital “R” although not in the traditional red-painted barn kind of way. The property’s collection of varied buildings and breathtaking landscape is ideal, and the farm’s reception site is effortlessly lovely with weathered wood-beamed ceilings. Market lights belong here.

Belle Haven

Built in the mid-1800s, Belle Haven is exquisitely preserved and utterly charming. Just outside of Charlottesville, this historic home and farm are accompanied by a variety of vintage estate buildings – each with its own unique personality – and the property overlooks the wide bends of the James River. The North Terrace, or “Secret Garden,” is a sweet spot for small gatherings and the Allée’s evergreen-lined path is photo op central. Then there’s the barn. One of only a few left in the area, Belle Haven’s bank barn is possibly the prettiest around. With peeling red paint, original wood plank flooring and an exposed hayloft, it’s rustic wedding perfection.
