This hotel, restaurant, bar and movie theater is within walking distance from our house, and we love it! It's definitely very "Portland", and although no rooms are blocked, we highly recommend it!
Since it opened in 1915, this historic elementary school has been a beloved fixture of its Northeast Portland neighborhood. McMenamins has renovated the once-abandoned scholastic gem and turned it into Portland's most delightful lodging establishment. Here you'll find 35 comfy guestrooms fashioned from former classrooms (complete with original chalkboards and cloakrooms, private baths, telephones and modems), a truly unique restaurant, multiple cozy bars, a movie theater, soaking pool, and even a working brewery (just wait until the principal hears about this!). Extensive original artwork and historical photographs cover the walls, ceilings, doorways and hallways of this place and the gift shop beckons with mementos of your stay.
