About Us

This 27-room English Tudor style mansion, located in Lead, was built by the Homestake Mining Company in 1933 at a cost of $200,000. After two superintendents' residences were lost (1880 and 1896) to ground subsidence, the "Big House" as it became known, was built to serve as the new residence for general managers of the Homestake Mine.

While in use, the mansion was the site of lavish social entertaining. In 1979, a new general manager decided not to occupy the mansion. Since then, it has been used for providing fine lodging to visitors, weddings and receptions, family reunions, meetings, and corporate retreats.

The bathrooms of the home were displayed at the 1933 World's Fair and the master bathroom has the undisputed honor of being named the First Place Winner that year. It boasts a luxurious six foot tub accented by original Art Deco tile work and light fixtures, and gold plated faucets. Plus, a separate multiple-head shower (think of the rarity of that feature back in the 1930's).

The Homestake Mansion has four suites, each with their own private bathroom. The Homestake Suite opens up to the balcony above the upstairs great room which houses the electric piano and seating for eight (the perfect location for the pianist and vocalist at your ceremony). The carriage house has been transformed into a fifth suite, complete with its own bathroom and kitchenette. Other amenities include upstairs and downstairs Great Rooms, bar, formal dining room, kitchen, hot tub, dry sauna, bumper pool table, a Den with sofa sleeper, three pianos (grand, upright and electric, a formal entry way, laundry room, brick patio and grill/smoker. The mansion will comfortably sleep 5 couples. And with two sofa sleepers, additional air mattresses available and 4 community bathrooms, can easily handle several more family or friends. All without feeling the least bit cramped.

This truly is a one-of-a-kind historical property - perfect for hosting your special event. Catering and bar service is also available.
