Located in the heart of downtown Smithfield, Windsor Castle Park is a brand new riverside 208 acre park dedicated in May of 2010. Windsor Castle Farm was originally part of a 1450 acre parcel patented in 1637 by Arthur Smith, an ancestor of the Town’s founder Arthur Smith IV. The purchase of 162 acres of farm was made possible through the generous contribution of Mr. Joseph W. Luter, III, founder and former CEO of Smithfield Foods. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis McMurran also gifted another 46 acres to the town for the park.
Windsor Castle Manor House and its eleven outbuildings anchor the park on a hill crest overlooking the Pagan River and Cypress Creek. The manor house is thought to have been built in the middle of the 18th century. It is unknown how the name Windsor Castle became attached to the property. Other historic structures on the property are a smokehouse, two mid-19th century granaries, two 20th century granaries, stables and a log corncrib. The property is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places.
The main entrance to the park is located on Jericho Road. Access from downtown Smithfield is also available at South Mason Street and from the Smithfield Station parking lot. (As a courtesy to Smithfield Station regular users of the trails are encouraged to use the main parking lot on Jericho Road.) Windsor Castle Park offers a beautiful natural setting with a “touch of the past” for special events. The gorgeous natural amphitheater and the grounds by the Manor House sweeping down to the river make a picturesque setting sure for any celebration.
