Even harder than getting him to propose, finding the perfect venue is one of the most challenging tasks in wedding planning. And this time of year, with other newly engaged brides competing for the same venues and wedding dates, it can feel as overwhelming as searching through the racks at Nordstrom during their half-yearly sale. While you may be willing to settle for anything pretty at Nordstrom even if it isn't quite the right size (you will lose that 5 lbs right?), the same logic shouldn't be applied to choosing a venue. The venue is such an important decision, don't let it be pressured by things like times or available dates or how that frenemy from high school is about ready to book the nicest place in town. Take a breath before dragging your honey on a whirlwind venue tour of your city, and figure out what type of venue makes the most sense for your wedding.
A few helpful tips:
- You probably already have some specific ideas about your event (yes, I am talking to you, Miss Girl with a Multi-Tabbed Wedding Binder). Make sure that those ideas can incorporate well into your venue. For example, if you know that you want a relaxed and casual wedding, don't even bother going to stately hotel ballrooms. If you absolutely must wear that elaborate princess gown, I'd steer clear of the local park.
- Maybe you just can't make up your mind about what you want. You just got engaged. Lots of life change going on right now. You are allowed to be a little indecisive. Touring venues might just help you make those decisions (or make you realize that what you really need is a martini - win/win if you ask me). Just remember that when you search for venues, research both conventional and unconventional choices. Check out everything online from churches to roller rinks and see what appeals to you.
- Don't just rely on the venue's photography. Ask to see some real weddings or other inspirational images so that you can visualize how the venue actually looks in "event" form. Some venues make better first impressions than others. But some just need a little work. Remember that hideous shirt he used to wear? Exactly.
So grab a cup of coffee and a cinnamon roll (ok, maybe half a cinnamon roll - dress fittings are right around the corner) and start searching for your venue now.
