How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story:
My husband's brother introduced us at a concert in February of 2008. We made a connection right away. After several months of a long-distance relationship (I was away at graduate school), he flew me back to Texas for the weekend. When he picked me up he was wearing a black suit and looked very handsome. He had made reservations at a beautiful restaurant and took me to eat. He had requested for us to be seated at a private table. We were the only ones in that section of the restaurant.
After dessert, he proposed!!! I was so happy and surprised, I could not believe it!!!
What was the theme or design inspiration for your wedding?
I wanted a beautiful wedding that was more modern than traditional. At first I did not know what my inspiration would be because I loved everything that I saw in the bridal magazines! However, as I started to see what I liked the most, the details and colors reminded me of the movie Marie Antoinette. I had the blue ("pool") color as my main color, and I had the bridesmaids and myself wear gold shoes. I had feathers in my hair which reminded me of the various decorations found in Marie Antoinette's attire. My cake had two glass glitter birds with feathers on them, which reminded me of a hair piece that she once had.
Tell us about the attire for both bride and groom:
The guys were black suits with matching ties and pink calla lily boutonnieres, and the groom stood out by wearing a black suit with a white tie and a white calla lily. I wore a white gown by Melissa Sweet, which looked like an upside-down calla lily. The dress was also simple but elegant, which reminded me of the gardens where we got married.
Favorite design element of your big day:
I absolutely LOVED my dress!!!!!! The whole day it made me so happy that I could wear it that I did not want to take it off!!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding?
We had a very small budget for the wedding ($4000)!! I also got engaged and married within my first year in graduate school, so I had a lot going on while planning my wedding! Oh, and I was in a different state, so everything was done online or on the phone until May when I went back home.
What advice would you give to a couple planning their wedding?
To look at the things that make them happy and what represents who they are and to build their wedding around that. There is a lot of pressure to have a "perfect wedding" but at the end of the day it does not matter what other people like or don't like, how much was spent, or what you did or did not do, what matters is how the couple feels on their special day.
Best advice someone told you at the wedding?
Simply, to have a lot of fun!
Any specific reasons behind certain choices you made for your wedding? Maybe flowers that were your mom's favorite, or your first dance song was the first song you ever heard together, that kind of thing?
I wanted the wedding to really represent us as a couple, who we are and where we came from. I had all my flowers flown in from the Andes in Ecuador, which is where I am from. Aside from my immediate family, my relatives were not able to attend the wedding, so it was really special to have something that represented my country.
Tell me something about your photographer Gilcelia Photography.
I felt a really good energy from my photographers. I had it in mind that I wanted to have fun at my wedding and they really helped me do that. I felt taken care of that day; I did not have to worry about anything because I knew they would capture it all. I really trusted them and that meant a lot to me and my family.
