Krista and Gavin were married in an area outside Austin, TX known as "Hill Country." And it was such a pretty choice. Read Krista's thoughts below on creating fun DIY projects and her advice for staying within your wedding budget!


Questions for Real Weddings:
Did your wedding location hold a specific significance to you?

My husband and I wanted to get married outside of Austin and since I am from the hill country, Vista West Ranch seemed like the best place to get married. We wanted to have a lot of room for guests and kids to run around while the wedding party got ready and took pictures. We loved the biergarten and refurbished barn, as well as the cute ceremony site we were sold!
What was the most meaningful part of your day?

There were so many meaningful parts of the day, from setting up the reception to taking photos with family. I would have to say the most meaningful part was right before the ceremony. My dad had built this photo-board complete with old and new photos of both my husband and I. Right before the ceremony we were standing behind it (so the people couldn't see me) and my dad was just pointing out all these old photos of me telling me which ones were his favorites. I could not stop crying; it was so sweet and just a beautiful moment to kick-off the rest of the fantastic evening.
Did anything funny or out of the ordinary happen?

As far as the weather goes, it was a gorgeous cloudless, sunny day. But I will say it was a teensy bit windy and cold for the ceremony. There was a ripple of goose bumps from the girls to buckling knees from the guys. My husband and I just smiled and shivered together. The pastor even sped up the ceremony because he felt bad for us. Overall, I was just glad goose bumps don't show up in photos!
Tell us about your wedding details.

I really wanted to incorporate the old, vintage style with a rustic look. I love butterflies and thrifty items so I just started collecting little things as soon as I knew we'd be having a wedding. I wanted to have items from my family to complete the décor with each detail having a special meaning. I used my grandmother's crystal bowls as candy holders for the dessert bar, old Arkansas pinecones and lace doilies as center pieces, and borrowed old canning Mason jars as candle holders. The baskets for the flower girls were my grandmother's and the unity vases were from my mother's crystal collection. I was told that bees love flowers and in order to avoid a potential disaster, I said no flowers. Instead the bridesmaids held lanterns decorated with hanging ribbons and the flower girls tossed purple and white feathers. I made the boutonnieres for the groomsmen and the 'here come the bride' sign for the ring bearers from felt and fabrics. I really wanted to be hands-on in the decorations.

We opted to go with a dessert bar instead of a big cake we wanted the reception to be a big party where people could get up and have places to go to. We had Amy's Ice Creams, Kenny's Coffee, Tiny Pies and Salt Lick Cobbler for the dessert bar, complete with all different types of hard candy toppings.

Overall I had a vision for a simple, family oriented wedding complete with new and old traditions. From what I hear, the wedding was a success!
How did you know your partner was "the one"?

I would have to say when he met my family for the first time. He was flawless; just plain brilliant and charming. He is every single one of my family members all wrapped in one. God truly gave me the best man to be my best friend.

Any advice you'd give new brides who are just getting started?

Make a list of everything important to you. Whether it's the food served, dance music, ceremony site pick out where you want to spend your money and go from there. A budget is very easy to keep if you have realistic expectations. You are going to spend more than you think, but believe when it is all said and done, there is no price on your day. You will have those memories for the rest of your life! And write everything down everything. Take it all in. Someone said to me about two weeks before the wedding and it was so true- "you get to be queen for the day, nothing else matters". Now this does not mean you get to be a bridezilla, but just relax! Whatever is going to happen will happen, whatever hasn't been done just won't get done and no one will know the difference.
