The Do’s and Don’ts of Announcing Your Engagement on Social Media
Congratulations! You said yes, and you can’t wait to share the news with your family and friends. Before you head over to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, here’s what you should know about announcing your engagement.
Long gone are the days when announcing your engagement took place in the local newspaper. Today, couples share their happy news via their favorite social media channel. While doing so is a much more informal, inexpensive, and quicker way to announce your engagement, it comes with some hazards. Read on to find out what you should and shouldn’t do when crafting that perfect social media engagement post.
1. Make sure you’ve told close family and friends in person or via phone first. There’s nothing worse than finding out about a sibling or best friend’s major life moment by social media post. Not only is it impersonal, but it can alienate those closest to you. It might be tempting to add that ring pic to your Instagram as soon as you can, but hold off until you’ve shared the good news with your parents, siblings, and best friends. In person is always best, but a quick FaceTime or voice call is a great substitute.
2. Don’t spam your social media channels with the news. A curated photo album on Facebook with a few good shots of your ring and selected pictures of you and your fiance is always well received. Avoid posting dozens of pictures of your ring since that can be overkill; while your ring is gorgeous, people will start to scroll on by if it’s the only thing you’re posting about.
3. Keep the focus on you and your soon-to-be-spouse. Your social media followers care about you, not how many carats your ring has or how much it cost. When sharing the news, it’s appropriate to showcase your love for your fiance (that’s the whole point of an engagement after all!), but keep all of the financial details between you and your sweetie.
4. Don’t feel the need to share every single detail. By its nature, social media is short and sweet and easy to consume. Definitely put up the moments that your online friends want to know–the date, time, place, and special moments from the engagement–but don’t get bogged down with a 1000-word Facebook post.
5. Be prepared for everyone to know once you post. If you’re not sure how your extended friend group is going to react to the news, or you know that your favorite aunt isn’t going to approve, hold off on announcing your engagement in such a public way. Information travels at lightning speed via social media, so expect everyone to know much sooner than you’d expect.
6. When the congrats start pouring in, take time to respond. It might be easy to passively bask in the comments that are sure to come your way, but a quick response goes a long way. Many of the people interacting with your social media posts will be coming to your wedding, so make sure to acknowledge the time they took to share their joy with you.
