Story Behind the Art: This rug was created by village weavers in the Varanasi region of India, in the Bhadohi village. Rugs from Isfahan feature a variety of fascinating themes such as floral designs, gardens full of animals, and intricate medallions. The weaving technique is hand-tufted, which is a rug making process where weavers insert yarn into the rug backing with a hand held tufting gun to push and pull the threads through a pre-woven grid foundation. In a tufted rug, the tops of the loops are sheared to expose the ends of the threads for a softer, plusher pile. This rug was created in the Varanasi region of India, in the Bhadohi village. Herat Oriental has been providing beautiful, authentic, handmade rugs to Worldstock for over 10 years. Worldstock has given us the opportunity to create jobs for over 2,000 local village weavers, which helps them to greatly support their families. The majority of the weavers are women, who live in the villages of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran and India. As we grow with Worldstock, we are able to create more jobs for female weavers who otherwise would not have the opportunity to do so. The community also thrives from rug weaving as the local farmers benefit from wool sales, and the local artisans create natural and vegetable dyes for the weavers to use in their designs. What is Worldstock? The handcrafted touch of artisan skill creates variations in color, size and design. If buying two of the same item, slight differences should be expected. Note: Color discrepancies may occur between this product and your computer screen. Imported Tip: We recommend the use of a non-skid pad to keep the rug in place on smooth surfaces. All rug sizes are approximate. Due to the difference of monitor colors, some rug colors may vary slightly. We try to represent all rug colors accurately. Please refer to the text above for a description of the colors shown in the photo. Please keep in mind that new wool rugs may initially shed and have a natural capacity to shed for several months after purchase. This is normal due to the nature of construction of most wool rugs and not a defect. Click here to view our Wool Rug Care Guide . read more
