Newlywed Perspective: Valentine’s Day
You see that green thing in the photo up there? The sad, lonely, abandoned tree lying on its side on the ground? Well, that poor little fir used to live in our living room. He was covered in lights and ornaments and had a gold star at his top and a red felt tree skirt.

Well, that poor little fir used to live in our living room. He was covered in lights and ornaments and had a gold star at his top and a red felt tree skirt. But this past week – since it’s, you know, almost February – we removed all his trimmings and dragged him outside…to be turned into firewood.
Sigh. I’ll miss his brightly colored lights and fresh piney scent warming up our living room on winter nights! But I think it was time…he dropped at least a hundred needles every time someone opened the door.
However, the passing of Christmas (and New Year’s and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day) and the onset of February lead us to our next holiday: Valentine’s Day!
I’ll admit that I never used to get particularly excited about Valentine’s Day. It was all pink and chocolatey and there were too many flowers involved. And then of course I met my husband and fell in love and all the cheesiness transformed into something I could really enjoy (plus it finally clicked that Valentine’s Day was an opportunity to tell everyone I loved how special they were to me, not just my husband!).
I’m even more excited about this one that I have been about past Valentine’s Days. It’s our first Valentine’s Day as a married couple! And whether we spend it going out to a fancy dinner or hanging out at home in our jammies and eating chocolate Reese’s Peanut Butter Hearts, it’s another day that we get to spend showing each other how much we care!
There is the matter of figuring out what exactly to get Shayne for a holiday typically covered in pink hearts, but I’m sure something will come to me.
But how about you, Delightfully Engaged? Whether you’re engaged, single, married- what do you like to do for Valentine’s Day? How are you going to celebrate the one you love- and all the other people who make your life special? I’ll be the first to confess that I still love buying a box of kids’ valentines and mailing them to friends. Last year everyone received the Jonas Brothers, but I haven’t found anything quite up my alley yet this year.
