How to Make Sugared Fruit

Frosted fruit is festive for a winter or holiday wedding. It’s inexpensive too! Try your hand at making some. With a little practice, you’ll have it down in no time! Total cost for one centerpiece: $25.

Supplies:

fruit

fine white sugar

egg whites

paintbrush

Steps:

1. Separate eggs so you have a bowl of egg whites.

2. Use the paintbrush to apply a thin layer of egg whites onto a piece of fruit (work on one at a time or they will dry too quickly).

3. Roll the fruit in a shallow bowl or plate of sugar.

4. Fill in holes by sprinkling more sugar on the fruit.

5. Let the fruit dry for about 20 minutes and repeat once.

Tips/Mistakes:

Small fruit works best. Try using small tangerines, apples, pears grapes or oranges. Be sure to use very fine sugar or it will clump. If you are using fruit without long stems, get some skewers so you have something to hold onto when you are adding sugar to the fruit. Prepare a few days in advance and style in a small wooden bowl with ribbon in the center of round reception tables.
